How to change an almost 8 month old

1. Put wiggly baby on the floor (because it is much, much too scary to change him on the changing table now)
2. Lay baby on back
3. Turn baby back to his back
4. Manage to get his pants off
5. Catch him before he gets out the door, take lamp cord or whatever else he may have already gotten to, out of his hand
6. Repeat steps 2-3
7. Remove diaper while holding both of baby's feet in one hand
8. Get arm workout while baby tries to flip and crawl out of your grasp
9. Catch baby, who has of course, gotten out of your grasp
10. Try to distract baby with a toy, a blanket...anything!
11. Wipe baby
12. Catch baby again
13. Explain to baby why we don't play with dirty diapers.
14. Repeat steps 2-3
15. Put clean diaper under baby
16. Fasten half of diaper
17. Catch baby and refasten half of diaper
18. Fasten the other side of the diaper
19. Somehow get baby into pants
20. Place baby into "cage" while dirty diaper gets put into wet bag and hands are washed

Take baby out of cage and head downstairs for the next fun activity of the day.

Repeat again in 2 hours.

  2. Oh yeah, this is exactly how it goes for us too! My sweet daughter is also 8 months and is quite excited to be mobile - like, she doesn't want to stop crawling if she's awake.

Sometimes I try to get the pants off while holding her in my lap, or if I can get dad to help me, he pulls them off while I hold her up, and then I drop her back into them (as he holds them out) when I'm done. OR, just ask him to do the whole operation and try not to laugh as he struggles too! :)

  3. Oh, and this is why I'm starting to rely more and more on my AIOs and pockets instead of prefolds and covers. Two steps for the diaper is just too much sometimes! This is also motivating to try to start elimination communication. I'll be writing about that soon on my blog.

    Great post!

  4. My baby is 8 months and this is all too true for us too! Sometimes I can get him to hold a toy in one hand and I can hold both ankles and the other hand to keep him from gettin his hand it the poop! Such a fun age!

  5. HAHAHA this sounds familiar. I find it amazing how proficient at squirming out of my grasp my 9 month old is. I've recently been attempting to put on his diaper while he is standing. It's more difficult but at least I don't have to fight with him or listen to him cry. Good luck!

  6. my last step would be: tell baby "all done" and watch in frustration as he lays still and just stares at you. Loved this post!
