Terminology

I'm going to tell you the differences between the different types of cloth diapers because it is very confusing for the newbie!  I think I have it all figured out now, hopefully this will help you if you are thinking about cloth diapering...

Flat Diapers:
-A Large square or rectangular piece of fabric
-Must be folded to fit
-Versatile
-Work for a large range of sizes
-Require a waterproof cover

Prefold Diapers:
-Pretty much a flat diaper that has been, you guessed it, "Prefolded" into smaller sections
-Made up of several layers.  For example: 4x8x4 -- 8 layers in the middle section with 4 layers on either side
-Inexpensive
-Effective and easy
-Need folded to fit
-Require a waterproof cover

Contour Diapers:
-Shaped like disposable diapers
-No elastic at waist or legs
-Require pins or snappi to fasten
-Require a waterproof cover

Fitted Diapers:
-Shaped like disposable diapers
-Have elastic at waist and legs
-Most fasten with Velcro or snaps
-Require a waterproof cover

Pocket Diapers:
-Have a pocket where an insert is placed for absorbency
-Are not effective without an insert
-Most have a waterproof cover built in
-Removable insert = faster drying time

All-in-one (AIO) Diapers:
-Works like a disposable diaper
-Fasten with snaps or velcro at the waist
-Built in waterproof cover
-No folding or inserts

All-in-two (AI2) Diapers:
-Works like an AIO
-Has a removable doubler to add absorbency
-Removable doubler cuts down on drying time

One Size (OS) Diapers:
-Designed to fit all sizes
-Probably won't fit premature babies
-Probably won't fit big toddlers
-More cost effective than sized diapers
-Can be bulky on small babies

I think I got everything!  If you have any questions or if I missed anything, please leave a comment!

Hi! I just found your blog through Google! How awesome that you just posted this! I am not a mother yet, not even expecting...but I really want to use cloth diapers for my children. I know I'll be going against the grain and many will tell me not to, but I'm interested anyways! Can't wait to read more!

You did awesome! You covered just about everything, but there are tie diapers too. You can see a picture of them and a description on my webpage here http://www.niftynappybyvilate.weebly.com

Great job though. I love your blog BTW! :)

May want to add the extra stuff also. I am still a little confused on the insert/doubler/liner terms.

Found your site when searching for cloth diapering on vacation. I'm expecting #2 in about a month and it's looks like we're doing a diaper service. I really wanted to do clothe this time around and I think it was not having to wash them ourselves helped him agree. Anyway, I have a fair idea of what's available, or I think I do but I also find more and more options, and it's overwhelming. I'm commenting on *this* post after choosing the "terminology" link on another (I've been reading through your posts backwards) that talked about fitted clothe. Even with the comparison, most of them sound about the same; like flat and prefold, contour and fitted, pocket and AIO. I'm also wondering why would the compostable soakers from groBaby be helpful for going out? Is it because they can be tossed in the garbage? If that's the case, then why not just use disposables? The local service has 3 options: cotton, compostable, and cotton-compostable combo. We already are planning on traveling for over a week when baby #2 is 6 mo, so I'm trying to figure out what we'd use then.

And in line with the previous comment: what's the difference between an insert and a flushable liner?!

Sorry, I hope you don't mind the massive comment.
